Going blonde is a process and if you’re thinking about it, there’s a ton to consider. Before I did, I didn’t know much about how it worked. I never really committed to it, just a few highlights here and there.
When I first went blonde, I made one of the biggest mistakes you can make – I didn’t do my research. I went to the wrong colourist and ended up with orange ombre hair instead of the blonde I wanted. First thing to consider: educate yourself and know what you want – don’t leave it up to anyone else. When I first went in, I just told her I wanted a blonde ombre. Since hindsight is 20/20, I totally understand where I went wrong and the mistake I made not being aware of how the process works and not being specific with what I wanted. Do your homework before going in.
Obviously, my colourist/stylist now is a genius and I trust her completely with my hair. She knows what I want, we’ve talked about the tones I like, what’s possible and what’s not. Second thing to consider: Find a salon/colourist who knows their stuff! To be completely honest, I knew going from very dark brown to blonde would be a process but doable. People get it done all the time. I like to collect images on Pinterest of hair inspo that I can show to my stylist. It’s a good idea to always have a backup if your first choice is not doable. Discuss how you can eventually get the tone you want or alternatives you can achieve. To take me from orange to ash was a process…it’s not always doable in one go.
Third thing to consider: The cost. Going blonde isn’t cheap; it’s an investment! Time in the chair, aftercare, toner and purple shampoo’s can cost a small fortune throughout the year. Of course, it all depends on what services you have done but think about your budget and ways you can get the most bang for your buck. I, for example, don’t colour my roots – I know that will cause my cost to go up. Find a happy medium that will be budget friendly and look fabulous.
